Playdate crashed while idle

I saw my playdate just spontaneously crashed on its own from locked state. It reboots automatically after a few seconds, so I would have missed it if I didn't notice the screen flash. crashlog.txt said it happened 8 times recently, pasted below (I can't be sure if the earlier entries were the same kind of crash, but the last two were definitely the same crash-while-idle problem since I saw them happen):

Had this happen to me too! Currently on version 3.0.4. Strangely I'm also getting a crash when attempting to update, which could be related ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Also just had this, running 3.1.1. Now any time I open the Settings app, it crashes a few seconds later.

edit: seems to be just crash looping on its own every few minutes now if I leave it alone

Same here, woke up to this (that's a RevA and RevB - both on 3.1.1):

Systems seem to work otherwise, except selecting the 'boot to data disk' option to get a crash log immediately crashes to e0 again.

I'm on v3.1.1, updated shortly after it was released. Haven't had any issues until today (noticed the PD sitting at the crash screen this morning): now it's crashing repeatedly. It may have been happening all along and I'm just noticing it at the right time.

It looks like any time the system tries to fire up wifi, it'll crash?

The easiest loop to reproduce:

  • System > System Update > light on the sleep button turns white -> crash

I'm also on 3.1.1 and it seems like the "Settings" and "Game Library" are the ones that crash on my device.

As @SamSpudd and @Kirkpad were discussing in Discord:

I'm not sure, so don't quote me on this, but I believe it may be some cloudflare anti-bot schenanigans. Potentially since they upped bot detection through them, all requests going through them (from PeeDees, for example), are getting flagged, not served valid 'this didn't work' errors, and crashing
I've just been doing some digging to what the playdate requests, and yep, a request went to a Cloudflare IP before it crashed, so it's literally calls there that is breaking it.
The call to 'whatever.panic.com' now heads to Cloudflare first before dying

Interesting so maybe they put the CloudFlare DDoS protection in the right place but it overdid it lmao

I'm also experiencing this, I'm on 3.0.4

Turning off Wi-Fi seems to have stopped the crashing. Had to forget the network, as Settings > Wi-Fi > Disconnect was also triggering the crash.

According to the crashlog the crashes started at around midnight CET August 14th and happened every 22 minutes (not counting the ones I triggered by interacting with the device) - looks very similar to crashlog I also have from version 2.7.6 from August 2025

I have exactly the same problem too!

Enter the settings system, and in a few seconds

After booting, it says to press the A button

The same crash keeps happening again.

This appears to have been resolved for me; I'm able to go into settings, check for an update -> no crash.

Gives credence to the notion that it had to do with something on the server side/cloudflare.

Fixed now for me too, see OS hard-faults every ~21 minutes on 3.1.1, reproducible by running a manual system update - #2 by willco

believe this is fixed as shared on Reddit see Brief official update regarding current crashing issues
