Smolitaire - a smol collection of solitaire games [Beta 2 now posted]

I wound up making a bunch of helper functions for moving cards around and managing the deck etc, so even if I don't end up making a full toolkit, I could 100% open-source those helpers if others found them useful.

That would be wonderful. At the absolute least, maybe make it a little clearer about using that A button to grab stacks. Other than this, All I could consider adding is some nice card sound effects. Other than that, this is brilliant.

Haven't tried the pdx yet but could you hold A to pick up a whole stack at once for bigger stacks as a shortcut?

yep! you can tap A to add individual cards to your hand, or hold A to add the whole stack.

Cool! I used to really enjoy Solitaire on my little old iPod.

Maybe you could double or triple the size of the suit symbols and the numbers? (With thicker strokes?) That could make it more playable in low light, or when jostling around—or for people like me who get lazy and won't wear their glasses

Huh, I'll try that. Thanks for the clarification. You're saving my thumb so many button presses.

This is great! Really well executed, and the animations are super playful. I especially love the hovering and "hold to undo" animations. It's definitely been a good idle time-spender since you posted it.

I've just been playing in the sim. I've got a few bugs/suggestions:

Bugs

  • When I started a game of Yukon, one stack was over-dealt? Or something? It persisted when I tried "restart game", but after playing for a bit it went away, and then "restart game" didn't bring it back? Only happened once in a few games, so I don't have a good set of repro steps:
    weird yukon start
  • Long-pressing to pick up a sequence in Spiderette looks like it went into the hidden cards and continued picking up. These cards stayed turned-around when placed, but I was still able to move them:
    bonus pickup
  • I couldn't figure out how to use the crank to put cards away. Tried twisting it both ways at the end of Yukon and Klondike games with the cursor over some stacks, or with a picked up card.

Suggestions

  • I had to look up the rules to Spiderette and Yukon. Maybe add them to the Help section?
  • I'd love a bit of sound. Maybe a card-ruffling sound when starting a new game, or a short sound when placing a card?
  • Very tall stacks get hard to see. I'd love to use the crank to just sort of peek up the stack, compressing the lower cards, so I can see what's hidden.
  • When playing Klondike draw-3, I'd love it if when I placed a card from the draw pile, the 3 cards slid over slightly to reveal the card beneath. Right now they just pop over when I pick a card up, which was a bit disorienting the first time it happened.

Again: really well built. Can't wait to see this release. :playdate_happy:

@downie this is all excellent feedback!

  • the hidden stack thing is something I noticed and haven't fixed yet!
  • the over-deal thing is wild, seems like maybe I'm not cleaning up properly in some conditions
  • sound is definitely on my to-do list (been putting it off  )
  • crank for stack peeking is a cool idea- gonna prototype that (also, moar crank!)
  • for game help, I'm considering making a full-screen help that pops up with graphics demonstrating the rules.
  • I like the animation idea for the draw pile, gonna prototype that as well.

gonna work on larger suits/ranks tonight, worried about how readable it will be when they're stacked but it'll be worth it (the perils of not having hardware yet!)

Cool! I can see the challenge in finding that balance. Maybe you can reclaim some empty vertical height in the layout, plus allow the bigger symbols to be hidden just a bit by the cards on top... and it might all still fit?

Looking forward to the next build! It's a simple game, but with enough work, you might just have a hit on your hands with this one!

If I could ask for one thing in the next build, it would be some card sounds. I've been spending A LOT of time playing this and would love to hear some card sounds so it's not totally silent. But hey, do what you want! Still very excited nonetheless!

Hello all- thanks for the feedback, and I'm back with beta 2!

smolitaire-1.0-beta2.pdx.zip (267.1 KB)

Changes

  • Sound!! I've added the first smattering of sound to the game, would love feedback on it.
  • Bigger, bolder glyphs and numbers- I bumped up the size of both, hopefully this helps with readability. I'm also experimenting with shading for the 'red' suits, curious what folks think.
  • Fixed the bug where sometimes you can pick up flipped cards when you hold the A button.

More fixes/tweaks tk.

Wow! A collection of Solitaire game for the Playdate. People used to play Solitaire on old Windows PCs you know.

I bumped up the glyph size- there's a new build above and I'd love to see what you think. Here's a screenshot:

I was one of them! A perfect time-spender.

Looks great! I like the extra dark edge on the heart for contrast—might look good on the diamond too?

Maybe the numbers could be bolder as well. But that’s hypothetical since I don’t have hardware—yet!

This game is great.

When playing draw 3, for cards that are covered in the draw pile, can you move the suit so that it is below the card value rather than to the right of it? this would let the suit show in the little vertical space of the card that is showing.

When a card is on top of any stack, can you make the suit HUGE and in the center? (I'm so old its hard for me to see a club vs. spade on this little screen)

Also, can you make the cursor "wrap" when it hits the edge of either of the 2 rows?
