Watching the graphical malloc map on Autorefresh is super useful! But when your game has been running a while—or even when the Simulator has been stopped at the launcher screen for a while—the Simulator becomes unresponsive until you click Clear. (This doesn’t clear the map view, just the unseen log list.)
I notice that below the Map view there are some unused grayed-out checkboxes from the List view. What if instead, it showed a checkbox for “Autoclear Log” or something? (Once in a minute? Every refesh? Whatever you think makes sense.) Which would only apply in Map view, but keep the Simulator running without having to manually clear the log.
(Alternatively, what if instead of a total Clear, it cleared old lines but left the most recent 100 or something? “Limit Log”?)
There IS a sort-of-hidden checkbox for this! I just found it by accident after all these years: switch back to List and uncheck Autorefresh. Then when you go back to map view, it will re-check itself but the log won’t be bogging anything down in the background.
Even though there appears to be one single checkbox for Autorefreshing both views, it’s really two that occupy the same place on the screen and have the same name.
The presence of those grayed-out List options made me think List and Maps shared a common UI, but they don’t.
Maybe getting rid of those grayed-out list-pane checkboxes in map view would make the two separate UIs more clear? And/or naming the map view checkbox differently, like “Autorefresh Map”?
I spoke too soon... even disabling Autofresh on the list view, it does still fill up and makes the Simulator bog down, just not as quickly. Then clicking Clear brings it back up to speed.
So something that either auto-clears the list, or prevents it filling up, would be great!
