I’m developing a Flappy Bird-style Playdate game called Flappy CATO, where you control CATO’s rotation using the crank. You only get a “jump” after completing a full 360° rotation. Our artist, Frank, has finished all the artwork, and I’ve completed the asset tests. I plan to finish the game’s core gameplay within the next two months. I’m sharing this now because I need some extra motivation!
CATO = Cat + Toast, originally featured in our puzzle-platformer game CATO by Team Woll, which is currently available on Steam. In that game, there was a mini-game segment called Flappy CATO, and this time we’re essentially porting it to the Playdate platform. Wish me luck!
Personally, I despise Flappy Bird. I never understood how a game whose only real claim to fame was "extreme difficulty via lousy controls" became such a phenomenon. That being said, back in my reviewing days I would write roundups that summarized several games, and I would sometimes have a segment called "At Least It's Not Flappy Bird" where I would highlight a game that actually made good use of the terrible concept. Between your visuals and the proposed crank control, this might just have appeared in that section. I'll be curious to see how this all plays out (sorry, couldn't resist).
I tried to sideload your game and unfortunately I can't. If I sideload it as is after downloading it says the file is in the wrong format, and if I zip it up first before sideloading it I get a message saying "pdxinfo is missing".
So I played it a few times. This should definitely appeal to Flappy Bird fans. I'm not sure its the best fit for me simply because I'm not great a twitch games, but once I got the crank thing figured out I was at least able to score a few points - my high so far is 6, which I think is probably better than any run I had on Flappy Bird.
A couple of small things I noticed. Occasionally, and I'm not at all sure how to reproduce this, it seemed like the cat would jump even though I barely moved the crank, and this was usually right after I had just completed a revolution. If I can ever do it intentionally I'll let you know how. Also, after a while the music just stops. I had to stop and reload the game just to make sure that I had actually heard music the first time around when I started it up. Not sure how long it takes, but it happened both times I launched the game and then played for a little while.
Thank you for playing! I've fixed the issue with the BGM stopping—it turns out I forgot to set it to loop, . As for the other issue, I haven’t been able to reproduce it yet, but I’ll keep an eye on it!
