Long Dog - katamari but you are a dachshund that likes to eat

In this game you are a dachshund (aka sausage dog) who loves to eat. You explore the level to find food, as you eat you grow longer, as you get longer you will be able to reach more places. By the end of the level you get to poop, the size of your poop represents your score.

This is how the doggy looks (wait for the butt sniff).

And here's a video where I mess around in an early test level. Watch with sound, cause the audio is quite satisfying!

I've been tinkering with this idea sporadically since august last year to learn how to use Lua and how to do stuff for the Playdate. I'm used to Unity and C# so it's quite fun (and sometimes frustrating) to find how different it is. Despite the learning curve I'm getting close to having a playable loop now! Just a few more bits and some level design until I've got the core.

If you'd be interested in play testing please let me know!

This is great - I bought the PlayDate because of my love of small strange games, so this is really hitting a sweet spot for me

That's also what attracted me to the Playdate, I'm glad you are intrigued by this. :- )

I hope there's more people like us!

Looking great! Isn't it more like Nobi Nobi Boy than Katamari Damacy?

Appearance wise it's kinda similar to Nobi Nobi Boy with the stretching. I can see the game concept to be a bit like Katamari Damacy; getting stuff to get bigger, and when bigger be able to go to new locations to get other stuff.

@Indiana-Jonas
It does look great! I do think the game should be more zoomed out, if the youtube video is of the whole screen. Seeing more of the surroundings seems like a key gameplay factor.

Looking forward to see your game progress!

I think that's a perfect way to put it Mathorne. I was referrring more to the gameplay progression/loop being similar to Katamari. It didn't even occur to me that Nobi Nobi Boy also exists, funny that it's even made by the same developer.

I see what you mean about it looking a bit too zoomed in.

I think it miiiight also feel that way because of the large open level. I'll see how it feels once I've put some time into actually designing something more intentional. I also wonder if it might feel better on device with this scale since the screen is so small. Hmm...

This is useful to have in mind though, thank you! And glad you like it!

Thank you both for commenting!

Love it!

Would be cool if the front legs alternated a kind of padding/walking/up-down animation?

Bahahahaha I love it. The first little gif is so immediately entertaining and charming. The video of gameplay looks fun too.

My dog does this huge stretch where it seems like he's trying to get as long as he possibly can. We call it 'long dog' like it's a yoga pose. Hilarious to see this game's title and gameplay.

Looks great. Will buy as soon as it's available.

Thanks! I think they do that but just a few pixels. I'll look into making that a bit more fun than this! I'm also planning to make the legs actually hang from underneath the head even while you're moving around.

This is so lovely to hear! I think I know what pose you mean, my parents old dog used to do something similar (he was a dachshund too).
Not sure if I will keep Long Dog as a title, but I guess it works?

Thank you for the kind comment!
