For a few months I have been working on my first project for Playdate: "The odd day off".
It's my first game I have ever made, but Pulp felt like a good way to start. Although I wanted to keep things small as a first project, it has gotten a bit out of hand, and the game is getting a bit bigger than I intended. (200 rooms and still some to do)
However, I promised myself I will finish it. I still enjoy working on it nearly every day (or night, after I've put my kids to bed.) with a clear goal in sight.
Today, I felt like sharing a first glimps of what it will look like and what it would be on the devforum
The main story is simple: You are a kid, and you have a day off to do anything you like. So you want to go on an adventure and see what comes along your way.
What follows is an open world for you to discover with lots of secrets, jokes, surprises, small quests, collectibles, videogames (within the game), some (light) puzzels and quite some odd stuff.
A world that encourages you to explore. There's no combat, just a fun and relaxing journey.
What I really enjoyed so far:
- my first steps into game design and programming
- creating the pixelart and finding an art-style. Try to make frames that feel a bit organic, and not too tile-based.
- world-building and using this small world as a canvas to tell tiny stories.
Feel free to let me know what you think about it so far.
Cheers!
