I want to get back previous version of Launcher with neat and simple planar list of games with couple categories, as it was.
I think the only way is to use custom launchers, you can try GitHub - scratchminer/Index-OS: A custom launcher for the Panic Playdate, but I don’t think it’s been confirmed to work on 3.0 yet.
It doesn't because they added new system-level functions in 3.0.0 to support game groups.
If you select the “All Games” folder it works the way it used to.
Unfortunately, this is just kind of one more level of complexity — one more “choice and press” here, another one more there…
Also, look, I see here a major ethical problem.
We see an overall increase in the number of games, we want more games on consoles and, consequently, their management, navigation — folders, more categories, sorting. But no one (except researchers who have been writing huge papers of researches on the subject for 40-50 years and 10 years specifically on video games) thinks that in order for games to be played, there shouldn't be too many of them. And there shouldn't be "free" installation — it should at least have a price in the form of additional management of space and waiting time, at a minimum. This has been scientifically proven many times. Therefore, I consider this new menu to be a harmful complication. Harmful because it encourages a large number of games, and because the complication is pointless, and that's exactly what it is — a complication. The previous version was perfect — two kinds for a simple list with categories, where the price for a large amount of installed games was the length of the list and the duration of scrolling, even though the scroll wheel worked perfectly quickly and accurately.
I plan to get the custom launcher support into 3.1. You’ll be free to make your own launcher with as much mental cost as you want. ![]()
Also, having got new Launcher with hierarchical menu, we lost awesome beloved feature when you wake up your Playdate after night and new background-downloaded game appeared as a gift with neat animation. That isn’t happening if Launcher is in “in the root of hierarchy“ state.
@dave, New Launcher is good definitely, but I really need old mode in it. And of course new API for custom launchers could be awesome too.
