Ortographobia - A horror game about spelling

Hello friends

I’ve been dabbling with the Playdate SDK for a while now, but finally decided to take a stab at releasing a game for it.

The game is called Ortographobia, a bizarre horror spelling bee, where you must find notes, kill off spelling bees, and spell words under pressure in order to survive and get the high score.

The game was inspired by an old educational game called Cave of the Word Wizard, where you play as a child lost in a RNG cave trapped with snakes and a wizard that paralyzes you, and forces you to spell a word. It seemed kinda twisted for a kids game, so I ran with it.

Originally, this was made for a game jam, but I thought it would be a great fit for the Playdate. I already had all the assets and mechanics, so I just threw it in a blender and here we are.

I should be on track to release next week

Could only embed one file, so here is the second gif I made for the purpose of this post

This reminds me loosely of this funny game I once found called “The Textorcist”! Absolutely love the concept, would love to try it!

A bit “afraid” of spelling on the playdate, haha. Is it controlled via the crank or the d-pad?

But absolutely lovely idea!!

The crank is being used for just letter selection (Which is significantly quicker than using the dpad). Since this is a port of a game jam game, I didnt really think about crank usage, but what I chose to use it for worked quite well
