8ball for the Playdate now in beta!

,

Hi! I'm here to talk about my first game made with the Playdate SDK/Lua.

I'd like to announce my brand new (made in Lua) game, 8ball!

TL;DR: I'm releasing my first Playdate SDK game, 8ball, and I'd love it if you'd beta-test it. Apply (for free) at beta.owen.uno.

8ball is a fun little game (utility? I gotta stop making utilities) for the Playdate. Whether you want to predict the future or test your fate, 8ball has you covered.
You can use the built-in (not-so-magic) 8 Ball to predict the future. Flip a coin to quickly settle arguments, pick between two choices, or decide who washes the dishes.

8ball is my first foray into the world of an SDK/Lua game* and, despite not being used to the draw-screen/listen-for-events/repeat style of programming, I quickly adapted and created 8ball.
It's nothing fancy, but it's very on-brand with what I do (make quirky, weird, meaningless, and generally unnecessary apps and games).
I had a blast making it, especially all of the assets (which I made in Sketch). It took me forever, but I made a card animation, list animation, and various sound effects for launching the game and the actions inside the game.

My Playdate broke :sob:, so I can't test the game on-device, and I need beta testers either way. I'd be so stoked if you'd apply (completely free) for the 8ball beta at beta.owen.uno, and I'll get back to you ASAP. It took me longer to make the beta website than it did to make the game (privacy is important), so you can rest assured that your data is kept totally secure.
Once you've been approved for the beta program, you can download the game, test it (either on-device or in the simulator), submit bug reports, feature requests, and reviews. Plus, you'll earn brownie points for testing.

Here's a sneak peek:

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!

* In the past, I've only used Pulp for Playdate game development (check this out). Although I'm a decent programmer, I've only ever worked in web dev languages (HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) as well as a little C++, and a whole lot of Swift and SwiftUI.

Update!

I found a bug on the website that would deny application requests even though they would partially go through the system. I fixed the bug, and the website is now fully functional. If you already submitted, try submitting again, or send me an email with your responses to the beta login form at hi@owen.uno.
Sorry for the bug, and let me know if you encounter any more errors, either by emailing me, submitting a bug report on the beta site, or responding to this thread!

Maybe I need beta testers for my beta testing website 🤣
