Hi everyone,
I'm Tolga from Istanbul, Turkey. I run a software company by day, and I'm a gamer and collector by night — I have a decent collection of retro games and consoles at home, and I play a lot. Got a Playdate a while back and fell in love with the device. Making a modern take on the C64 Hunchback has been in the back of my head for a while.
It started as a weekend experiment, and in couple of weeks it turned into a small but fun game (at least I hope so) , 50 story levels, an endless mode, added an online scoreboard, and a bunch of weather and gravity modifiers that keep things from getting repetitive.
I had a lot of fun making it, you can grab it on itch.io (it's free) https://thelastvogon.itch.io/crookback
Any kind of feedback is welcome and would mean a lot, bugs, notes, anything..
Thanks!
Here are few screenshots and gifs from the game:

Hey Tolga! Congratulations on shipping the game! My first impression was this is a quality game with nicely made art. I played all the way through on the console and finished the game in about 30 minutes. No crashes. It was challenging, fun, quirky, nostalgic. The weather function was really creative. Although I died so many times, having seemingly unlimited lives, a fast respawn, and variable death sound kept that part funny and not frustrating. I appreciated the close encounters musical reference.
Two things which I am not sure if they can be called bugs but just a feedback:
-
in the ending scene, when the princess talks, I need to press A to dismiss the dialog. It seemed like pressing A there not only closed the dialog but also caused me to unintentionally jump – into a fire ball – and die – several times. Strange but its a challenging puzzle with a lot going on, I found a way.

At the end for submitting my score on the scoreboard, the default name was something like AAAAAA. I updated/selected the first letter then my score was accidentally posted with the rest of the characters remaining as A. Was not my intention and slightly disappointed in myself for not using the name input interface correctly. Potential improvement ideas
-keep the default name blank instead of AAAA
-add name confirmation popup before saving/sending score
-or make an “OK” button which becomes available after selecting all name characters, so its not so easy to enter/save a wrong name prematurely
Thank you for sharing your creativity with us and for the fun times. M
