Radio possibilities

Hi- so I’m a PlayDate user and in my day-to-day, I operate a number of radio stations. I’m touching base with Public Media Apps to discuss a radio app that plays multiple streams.

It occurred to me that beyond Android/iPhone, our streams may be embedded or used elsewhere. Which had me thinking further… what if PlayDate had their own radio station that played music exclusive to their game releases, plus any other chiptunes that creators happened to submit?

I don’t know if a PlayDate console could support this (likely not, right?) but a Kingdom of Loathing-style radio station thru the PlayDate website may just be in order.

One of the items on my todo list is making it simple to open a network connection to an mp3 source and pipe it directly to a fileplayer (i.e. mp3 decoder). Simple in theory, anyway. What I don't know anything about is what the servers look like these days. Is mp3 still standard? Are they using HTTP or is there a different protocol or do you just connect to a port and it firehoses the data at you?

I’ll be sure to ask. At our community stations, we use MegaSeg for automation and most files our mp3s, but Jack FM stations and iHeart will have something else most assuredly.
