Api for wifi/networking?

so it is possible to do some level of networking it seems since whitewater wipeout has a global leaderboard, so i got curious about how to go about using the networking features of the playdate myself but i can't see anything in the c or lua documentation. i looked around the forums and found some talk of it not being in the 1.0 release, but potentially in a future release. what's the go with that currently, is there something the wider community can use right now?
